Samuel Marchant's Diary

Samuel Thomas Marchant (1862 - 1958) was a 4th great-grandson of Thomas Marchant the diarist.

In 1882 he emigrated to Australia on the Thirlmere (1777 grt, built 1874) and kept a diary for his 3 month stay on board.

We are grateful to Jill (nee Marchant) and Frank Clark for donating this material and to Robin Coates for his speedy transcription work.

In December 2005 we learned that Samuel’s brother Percy followed him to Australia and we are now researching his details and hope we will have an interesting story to add to Samuel’s.

Neither of their Australian family descendants were aware of each other’s existence until they were reunited through our website.
